Passionate young leaders honored in LeadCom CDO’s ‘Agipo Awards’

“Agipo”—the Visayan word for embers that continue to burn—was what the first batch of Leadership Communities (LeadCom) participants in Cagayan de Oro City decided to call themselves, as a way to represent their passion for service.

However, the LeadCom CDO participants were not the only ones who exhibited a passion for service. Partners of the program, such as the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, Balay Mindanaw Foundation, Ayala Business Club, and JCI Kagayhaan Gold, also showed commitment to supporting the young people of CDO, as they looked for solutions to some of the existing challenges in their local communities.

And as a result, “agipo” also became the name of an awards program that is unique to LeadCom CDO—a way to honor the young change makers in the city’s barangays. The awards also served as a culminating activity for the program’s “Showcase and Synergy” phase, when the participants exhibited their respective projects and their outcomes. This year’s LeadCom participants showcased their projects at Centrio Mall.

Now on its second year, the Agipo Awards held the recognition ceremonies at the Xavier University Little Theater last Friday. Nine major awards were handed out, the top award being the Agipo Gold Award, which was given to the barangay that garnered the highest number of points (based on the judges’ scores and program validation results). Individual awards were also given to a mentor and a team member.
